Gone gaga

Aboriginal music, ecclesiastic Gregorian chant, Bach, Beethoven, Satie and Cage. As well as the Beatles, Nirvana, Michael Jackson and Lady Gaga! Gregorian chant and Lady Gaga?
Has the <link ../en/>Festival Maribor
gone gaga here?
At first glance it may seem so, but music is not (or at least it shouldn’t be) about first glances. It is about three things, basically: rhythm, melody and bass line. Four things, if you add words. It was like this 40,000 years ago, and it is still like that today. It all developed from a single line, then, gradually the more complex structures took over, but the four elements remained. So, if you wanted to describe Lady Gaga to a deaf person, you would have to start with those four things. And if you wanted to explain the Gregorian chant – well, again, the same four things apply.
MUSIC. Throughout time, throughout the <link ../en/program/main-program/concert-no-16/>Timeline
…
Let the project <link ../en/program/main-program/concert-no-16/>Timeline
take you back in time and back on Saturday, 10th September 2011 at 7:30p.m., in the Union Hall, Maribor.

How do we imagine Nothing?
_________________________________________________________________________________

_________________________________________________________________________________

Is this really nothing? It’s an empty space.

But is an empty space the same as nothing? It IS nevertheless an empty space. So, if it IS, it surely could not be nothing. Or could it?

Questions, which have troubled philosophers as well as artists for centuries, are packed in the <link ../en/>Festival Maribor
's Nothing project that despite its name offers A LOT.

It offers the music by Beethoven, Cage, Pärt, Händel, Walton, Feldman, Scelsi and Tognetti, the art of Jon Frank, the words of Barry Humphries, the enthusiasm of the Festival Maribor Orchestra and the drive of Marko Letonja. It offers the Croatian Radio Television Choir and soprano Aleksandra Zamojska. It offers drums, organs, and bells.
Tognetti is fascinated with presenting the idea of nothing through sounds, voices, photographs, lighting and more. For, as he puts it: Nothing is the most fearful thing we know.
The multimedia project Nothing can be admired on Thursday, 6th September 2011 at 7:30p.m., in the Grand Hall of the Slovenian National Theatre, Maribor.
Ticket pre-sale can be found on the Internet and at the Eventim Outlets.

Despite his busy touring schedule Dejan Lazic always finds time for two things: playing soccer (which prevented him to join the Maribor Festival in 2008 – he broke his arm) and composing.

“After a rather busy touring period, a quiet week at home in Amsterdam dedicated to composing gives me the necessary creative balance, it’s kind of a musical yoga for me,” he explained in a recent article. ”Being a re-productive artist as a pianist, composing for me is the most honest way toward true productivity, and I believe that only with both combined can an artist find a full balance, satisfy the spirit on a large scale, and achieve richness of expression in all fields. Composing my own pieces makes me totally liberated, and that helps me tremendously as a performer.”

We look forward to hearing one of his works, the Three Istrian Dances for Violin and Piano, at this year’s festival, and hope that composing takes up as much of his time as possible in the coming two months. It’s not that we want Dejan to forget about his other passion – we just want him safe and sound for this year’s <link ../en/>Festival Maribor
.

Dejan Lazić at Festival Maribor between
:

Lessons for Immortality
Sunday 4th September 2011, Union Hall at 7:30 p.m., Maribor

The Universe Within
Thursday 8th September 2011, Kazina Hall at 11 a.m., Maribor

Phantasy and Freedom
Saturday 10th September 2011, Kazina Hall at 11 a.m., Maribor

Ticket
can be found on the Internet and at the
.

The Magic of Togetherness

Both
and
have attained worldly acclaim. Already as a child the Croatian cellist managed to amaze the musical world with her exceptional talent. Winning numerous prizes at international competitions, impressing musical masterminds as Mstislav Rostropovich and building her career, has made her one of the most sought-after cellists today. The career of Giovanni Sollima, the ”Jimi Hendrix of cello”, is twofold: not only is he an acclaimed cello virtuoso and regular guest at the most prestigious concert halls and festivals all over the world, but also an ingenious composer, who created a truly unique musical language by overcoming the boundaries between different musical genres.
is proud to offer its stage to the two magnificent musicians, who share their love for music and each other, presenting our audiences with a chance to enjoy the “magic”, which, as described by Monika, happens when they perform together: ”As though we have very similar views on music, something extraordinary happens when we play together: when I perform on my own, it sounds somehow masculine, but when I’m performing with Giovanni I become very feminine. He, on the other side, plays extremely manly, when performing on his own, but becomes softer, gentler, when playing together with me.”
Monika Leskovar and Giovanni Sollima at the Festival Maribor 2011 between 1st and 11th September:

Saturday, 3rd September 2011, St. Aloysius Church at 11.00
<link http://marketer.mio.si/link.php?M=258761&N=146&L=328&F=H _blank>
Boundless Creativity

Monday, 5th September 2011, Union Hall at 19.30

ON MAY 29TH THE SLOVENE PHILHARMONIC STRING CHAMBER ORCHESTRA will give a concert at the renowned STADTFEST FESTIVAL (VIENNA, MICHAELERPLATZ, 4.30 P.M.), sharing the stage with the pianist Elena Misirkova, the acclaimed ambassador of Macedonian culture. The concert will open with the Macedonian composer Vlastimir Nikolovski and Polonaise Op. 53 by Frédéric Chopin, followed by the orchestra performing Sonatina for Strings by the Slovenian composer Uroš Krek and Divertimento by W. A. Mozart.
The performance of the Slovenian orchestra also offers a wonderful opportunity for both, the presentation as well as the promotion of the European Capital of Culture, Maribor 2012.
Along with the Public Institute Maribor 2012, the Slovene Philharmonic String Chamber Orchestra is the producer of the Maribor Festival - 'one of Europe’s finest summer festival' (Daily Telegraph), which is one of the most important events of the European Capital of Culture.
In the coming year, the Slovenian town Maribor will be the European Capital of Culture. This will be the largest project in Maribor’s history, consequently bringing a new life to both, the town itself as well as its whole region. Throughout the year, Maribor 2012 will be presenting over 4,000 events in six partner towns – Maribor, Slovenj Gradec, Velenje, Ptuj, Novo Mesto, and Murska Sobota – which will surely cater to all tastes and leave no wishes unfulfilled. We promise thrilling experiences, grandiose spectacles, peaceful relaxation, having fun, and above all a heartfelt welcome. Every day.
